My little one decided to be up since 5 am, as opposed to her usual wake-up time of 7:30 am. I welcomed her and smiled, as she smiled back with wiggles and coos. This time of morning is usually mine to spend alone with the Lord in worship, prayer, reading and journaling. However, I chose to enjoy sharing this time together. I read scriptures aloud and she loved being there, on my lap, staring into my face and hearing my voice. Just she and I.
As I snuggled her in my arms this morning, I attempted to drink coffee, while alternating my pen and highlighter throughout the pages of The Mission of Motherhood, by Sally Clarkson. I was struck by many of the words I read. Encouraged and challenged as I was reminded (again) of the deeply rewarding, yet demanding call of Motherhood. I was reminded to stay focused on building a godly heritage in my children. Nurturing them with an undivided heart… A heart that is eager to meet their needs and minister to them as a priority. To not just speak about family being important, but to make the investment in my family because they are so valuable.
In my reading, I found myself also needing to pray and seek forgiveness from our gracious God. There are times, even as a stay-at-home-homeschooling-mama, that I may think of my children as slowing me down, or getting in the way of my productivity. They are not a hindrance…they are a blessing, and a reward. Truly treasures!
I have a deep desire to soak in every moment with them. To be fully present to their needs, putting my own desires aside, as I listen to their hearts and their dreams. Working closely with them as they struggle through their studies, and their relationships. Worshipping together daily, not treating Bible time as an assignment or a subject to work through, rather an encounter with the Almighty who dearly loves each of them.
Mothering is not part-time. It can not be accomplished on the side, or in a few hours a day, or on the fly as we fast forward through busy days and tired nights. It must be something that is purposefully attended to. Whether we have one child or several, mothering requires our undivided attention, our whole hearts, our focus, intentionality, prayer, faith and love.
I love to be reminded of my children’s value, their abilities, and my job to shape their hearts for God. I am called to nurture them, disciple them, sing to them, have deeply moving conversations with them, and to build a godly heritage in them. As I nurture and disciple them, according to God’s design, I am diligently establishing patterns for a lifetime. Building them up for a future in Christ. Each day is precious. Each moment counts. Even as they see my mistakes and I seek their forgiveness and understanding. Thank you Sally Clarkson for your constant encouragement in wisdom and through the Word!
Thank you Heavenly Father for the beautiful design you have created and established through family. I am so thankful for all you are doing in each of my children. May their love for you grow deeply, and their understanding of your Truth and your ways be magnified in their lives! You are worthy of all glory and honor!
