“But Daniel was determined not to defile himself by eating the food and wine given to them by the king.”
A captive. Taken from home and family and all that was familiar. Daniel would not be swayed. No parents present to remind him…this teenaged boy knew what he believed. He was determined not to defile himself. Determined not to partake of the food that had been offered to other gods. What initially started as a ten day fast, turned into a three year commitment. Three years of training, as captives, to be in service of an earthly king…Daniel understood his commitment to the King of All.
DETERMINED…to do right.
DETERMINED…to be strong in the face of temptation.
DETERMINED…to be set apart.
DETERMINED…not to defile himself…
And it wasn’t just about the food. This Hebrew boy was in a foreign land. A place where other gods were worshipped. In a culture far different than his own, the pressure to cave in must have been intense. But his determination set him apart.
Daniel’s strong testimony follows him throughout his life. The favor of God in his life was evident in his knowledge, in his favor with the king, in wisdom, and the ability to to lead.
As my family and I have just completed our first week of fasting in this new year, I am encouraged by the precedent that Daniel set for us so long ago.
STRONG. FAITHFUL. STEADFAST. KNOWLEDGABLE. COMMITTED. DETERMINED.
Thank you Lord for this example you have given us in Daniel. Let that kind of determination be a marker for me and my family. May we choose to walk in that determination daily as we make choices to serve you with every moment of our lives. I pray that our love and commitment to you would be so strong…nothing would sway us. That our love for you would be so deep, that we would worship you alone. And when temptations arise, other offers, distractions…we will choose you. Choose life. Choose to be undefiled – DETERMINED. Amen.
