Ketogenic Diet – Day One

Our first day at the hospital was a great success! Despite the fact that when we arrived, there was no record of our son being admitted…. And they asked if I was sure that he was to be admitted this day…I laughed inside and thought to myself, this is only a test! There has been way too much opposition in making this happen. So we waited two-and-a-half hours for a bed. Which was nothing compared to the years we have awaited healing in our sons body.

After fasting for seven hours, our little man loved the ketogenic eggnog that was presented to him. A combination of raw eggs, heavy cream, and vanilla extract hit the spot while he was hungry. Later, he ate scrambled eggs made with a lot of butter, heavy cream and cheese and he LOVED them. And his final food for the night was again the ketogenic eggnog…this time he refused it.

His seizures continue to be far less than before. I do not have an exact measurement, but I would guesstimate that he is having about 1/3 of the seizures he used to have – even just a few weeks ago.

The neurologist came by and asked how things were going. He is skeptical still. I asked about reducing the medication now that DeSean is having significantly less seizures. He said “This diet will not be a replacement for medication. It will help all the way around. But it is not intended to replace the medication.” And that was the end of the conversation. It certainly seems that he does not believe this diet is effective. And yet, many people have been completely healed through the use of this diet. He asked me about trying a new medication that he had recently prescribed. I expressed to him that I had not tried it, because research indicates that DeSean’s best chance at seizure reduction is through this diet rather than medication. DeSean has tried several meds and every time a medication fails, it is much more likely the next will fail as well. Research also indicates that this diet is most often a replacement for medication when it comes to successfully treating seizures.

There is so much hope! So much potential!

Onward and upward…. We are pressing in… Not giving up now!

I wonder why they are afraid to begin to remove the meds? The consequence would be more seizures? and they could begin them again? I am sorry if this sounds ignorant but I am not sure how it all works. It is amazing how food can effect our health in such a big way!! Praying ;O)

Hi Tana, thanks for checking in!
Ultimately, I just think that doctors have become more accustomed to using medications rather than addressing the issues with dietary therapy. There are risks and side effects to drastically changing ones diet… However, there are greater risks to taking multiple medications that cause many harmful side effects. The doctor has seen this diet work before, but in nearly 20 years of practice he has only had a few patients attempt the diet. The research and the evidence is out there….but I am not sure of how much emphasis he has put on studying that information.
